The City is proud to be partnering with the Australian Government’s Smart Cities and Suburbs Program, Water Corporation, Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, Curtin University – School of Design and Built Environment, Innovation Central Perth and Urbaqua to transform the inaccessible drainage basin into a multi-functional community space.

Developed by Josh Byrne & Associates, this is the concept for Wharf Street Basin Next Generation Community Park:
Through smart landscape design and technology solutions, based on the use of environmental data and community needs, the concept includes:

landscape design to promote the natural environment
a living lab where water quality and levels will be recorded in real time
interactive education stations
a bridge for pedestrians to access Cecil Avenue from Wharf Street
a boardwalk on the Wharf Street side of the basin
technology to provide information on environmental conditions at the park.
The City received $1.09 million funding from the Australian Government; $200,000 from Water Corporation and; $30,000 from Department of Water, Environment and Regulation to assist in delivering Wharf Street Basin Next Generation Park.

We’re currently working with local schools to help inform the final look of the new park, including the construction and installation of nesting boxes, planting days and artwork.
